Mind Wanderer. A mind-controlled meditative Device.

| Introduction

Mind Wanderer is a digital instrument that explores a novel way to sonify real-time brain activities, specifically the alpha activites in the brain.

Alpha-band wave in the brain indicates attentions. Alpha activity increases when we are conscious and attending to tasks, and decreases when the brain is relaxed and not particularly attending to anything.

When alpha is low, Mind Wanderer outputs multiple quiet and unpredictable chords, assisting the user to concentrate; when alpha is high, it produces sounds resembling long whip of winds to reflect the brain’s relaxed state.

A Muse electroencephalogram (EEG) headset is used to collect brainwaves at all frequencies, and send the collected data via Open Sound Control (OSC). MaxMSP then receives and processed the data; the amplitude of current Alpha-band activity (8~12Hz) and that of the total oscillations are smoothen and scaled to a specific range. MaxMSP then sends those data to Abelton to influence parameters in its instrument, as well as sending to Unity to control the movement of the spider and other display parameters.
